Who's it for?
The forum will be of relevance to anyone involved in the
negotiation of leases or the management of leasehold property.
During the session we will look at a number of issues from the

through on a case study involving a tenant who wants to get out of
its lease, focussing in particular on the break clause, alienation
provisions and insurance and reinstatement obligations.
When and where?
The forum will take place at our offices on Wednesday 2 May,
with registration from 2.30 pm for a prompt 3.00 pm start. We will
finish at around 4.30 pm. Information on how to find our office is

Confused about employment law changes planned for 2012
BrookStreet des Roches Seminar
Employment law moves at an astonishing pace.
2011 was a busy year in the world of employment law and 2012
looks set to follow suit.
The Government has stated that it intends to bring into force a
number of changes to employment law in 2012. Many of the proposed
changes could just be political posturing and will lead to nothing
whilst others may see the light of day.
Given this we can all be excused from feeling a little confused
as to what changes will take place. BrookStreet des Roches is
therefore holding a Seminar to help de-mystify this area.
The Seminar will touch on the major legislative changes over the
last 12 months, interesting cases which may have an impact on our
HR practices and looking forward to the changes likely to be
implemented in 2012.
The Seminar will be suitable for any HR professional or other
manager responsible for HR within their business.
The Seminar will be held on Wednesday, 8 February 2012.
Registration and refreshments will be from 9.30am and the
Seminar will start promptly at 10.00am.
There will be ample opportunity for coffees and networking
afterwards.

Oxford HR Forum
Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce Forum
This HR Forum combines factual information with discussions
around the effect of long-term sickness absence, and concludes with
an employment law update.
A recent survey found that staff sickness over a prolonged
period causes anxiety and guilt in the person off work, and
conflicting emotional feelings amongst work colleagues. The end
result is often low morale.
Sue Cranshaw will walk through some of the problems faced by
employers in this situation, and will then pose a trigger question
or two to kick off group conversations. This is where the real
value lies, as members learn from each other, benefit from a range
of different perspectives, and take away what is relevant to them.
This format is loosely based on the Knowledge Café concept click
here which was rated very highly by members who attended similar
forums earlier this year.
Steve Conlan will conclude the event with a bullet-point style
update on recent and imminent employment law legislation.

whether the lease reaches the end of its natural life or is
terminated early. This seminar is aimed at anyone who is involved

agents. We will be looking at the different ways in which a lease
may be brought to an end and some of the particular issues that

Heads of terms - how getting it right can save you money
Seminar
Almost every commercial transaction starts life as heads of
terms. When these are clear and comprehensive the documentation can
be agreed quickly and easily. When they are vague, conflicts will
arise leading to delays and expense.
This seminar is aimed at anyone who is involved in the
preparation and negotiation of heads of terms. We will be focussing
on terms for the grant of a lease but many of the points that we
make and issues that we cover will also be applicable to other
property transactions. The purpose of the seminar is to help you
understand how you can save both time and money by providing
solicitors with detailed heads of terms and by agreeing all of the
key points before you get us involved.

Acquiring land - what do I need to know about?
Seminar
When you acquire property you know what you want to use it for,
but investigations by lawyers often reveal easements, covenants,
ransom strips and access rights which impact upon your intended
use.

particular site and looking at how to identify and deal with the
third party rights which may affect the land but which often go
unnoticed until lawyers get involved. In particular we will address
problems you may face with regards to easements, covenants, access
rights, ransom strips and unwanted occupiers.

Compliance with laws - what does it actually mean?

"complies with laws", but what does this really mean?

advisors. It will provide an overview of what is actually meant by
a lease provision requiring "compliance with laws" and will look at
a range of topics including CDM regulations, the Disability
Discrimination Act and EPCs. The format will be very interactive
and we will be encouraging participation from those who deal with
these requirements on a daily basis and are able to add a practical
perspective.

tools to handle sick employees - either by returning to work or
